How to Add WhatsApp to Your Google Business Profile (2026 Guide)
Turn Google Search and Maps views into WhatsApp chats. Step-by-step setup for the WhatsApp chat button on your Google Business Profile, the link format Google accepts, and fixes when the button won't show.
How to Add WhatsApp to Your Google Business Profile (2026 Guide)
Someone finds you on Google Maps and wants one thing: to ask a question. Most of them tap "Call" β the channel small businesses answer worst.
Adding WhatsApp to your Google Business Profile puts a click-to-chat button directly on your Search and Maps listing. They tap, WhatsApp opens, and the enquiry lands where you already are.
What the button actually does
Google shows a WhatsApp button next to your other contact options on your listing, in both Google Search and Maps. Tapping it opens a chat with your number.
Two limits to know upfront:
- It's not Google's own messenger. Google's in-profile chat shut down in 2024; the "Chat" field now just forwards people to WhatsApp or SMS.
- It's region-restricted. Chat options only exist for select regions and categories, so a correctly configured profile can still show nothing.
What you need before you start
| Requirement | Details |
| --- | --- |
| Claimed + verified profile | Chat options only appear on profiles you own |
| WhatsApp-capable number | Mobile β not a landline, not a fax line |
| Click-to-chat URL | Full international number, digits only, https://wa.me/... |
| Feature available | Depends on your country and business category |
Step 1: build the link Google will accept
The Chat field takes a URL, not a phone number. WhatsApp then applies its own strict rules:
- Full international format, country code first
- Digits only β no
+, spaces, dashes or brackets - No leading zero β Belgian
0470 12 34 56becomes32470123456 https://, neverhttp://- No shorteners β
bit.ly-style links are rejected or stripped
https://wa.me/32470123456
With a pre-filled message, spaces become %20 and commas %2C:
https://wa.me/32470123456?text=Hi%2C%20I%20found%20you%20on%20Google%20Maps
Keep it short. Long encoded strings are a common source of silent failures. The link generator and message formatter build this for you.
Should you pre-fill a message?
Yes β a dozen words maximum. It tells you which placement produced the lead, and it removes the blank-page hesitation. Wording that works is in the click-to-chat templates guide.
Step 2: add it to your profile
Same path on desktop and mobile:
- Open your profile in business.google.com (or Google Maps app β Edit profile)
- Go to Edit profile β Contact
- Next to Chat, click the edit pencil
- In the Chat dropdown, select WhatsApp
- Paste your click-to-chat URL in the URL field β Save
Changes usually appear within a few hours, and can take longer in Maps on devices showing a cached listing.
Step 3: test it like a customer
- Search your business in an incognito window β you want the public panel, not your own view
- Open the Maps app on a second phone (or clear its cache first)
- Tap the button: right number, pre-filled message intact, no stray
%20
If the chat opens but the message is garbled, that's a link formatting problem, not a Google one.
WhatsApp vs "Text message": pick one
The dropdown offers WhatsApp and Text message. If you fill in both, only SMS is shown to customers β there's no way to display two.
| Option | Reaches | Typical reply speed |
| --- | --- | --- |
| WhatsApp | Anyone with WhatsApp installed β most mobile users | Minutes |
| Text message | Customers whose plan accepts SMS | Hours, often ignored |
Different Business Profiles can share one WhatsApp link, and a profile can list several WhatsApp numbers.
The button isn't showing: 6 causes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| No Chat section at all | Region or category unsupported | Nothing to configure β use a website button instead |
| No WhatsApp in the dropdown | Profile not fully verified | Complete verification |
| Tap does nothing | Invalid URL: +, leading zero or shortener | Rebuild digits-only |
| "Invalid number" | Landline or number not on WhatsApp | Switch to a WhatsApp Business mobile number |
| Desktop works, Maps app doesn't | Cached listing | Clear app cache or wait 24β48h |
| Vanishes after an update | Chat field reset during a sync | Re-enter and save the URL |
If the feature simply isn't offered where you are, use the fallbacks: a WhatsApp button on your website, your contact page, and a QR code on the storefront. Those work everywhere, no eligibility rules.
How to tell whether it's working
Google Business Profile reports engagement per contact action, so you can compare chat taps against calls and website clicks over 28 days. In most local businesses, chat outperforms calls on enquiries received β a message waits until you're free, a missed call doesn't.
To attribute properly, vary the pre-filled text by placement β one for Maps, one for Instagram, one for your site β and note which message each lead arrives with. Full method: campaign tracking guide.
Once enquiries flow, the bottleneck becomes speed. See the response time guide, and set up quick replies and away messages before a busy week catches you out.
FAQ
Is it free? Yes. Google and WhatsApp charge nothing for the contact option; you only pay if you automate with the WhatsApp Business API. Does the customer have to save my number? No β the link opens the chat directly, no contact saving required. Can I use a personal WhatsApp number? It works, but your personal photo and status become customer-facing. A separate WhatsApp Business number lets you add a catalog and business hours. Does it help local SEO? Faster replies and more contact actions support engagement signals, but the visible win is conversion: every tap is a conversation that would otherwise have been a missed call. The 5-minute version
Build the link digits-only, paste it in Edit profile β Contact β Chat β WhatsApp, save, then test in incognito and in the Maps app. If the option isn't offered where you are, put the same link on your website and in a QR code β the conversation is what matters, not which button carried it.
