WhatsApp Group Invite Links for Business: Create, Share and Secure Them

A chat.whatsapp.com invite link is one of the fastest ways to put customers in a room with you β€” and one of the easiest to leak. Here is how to create a WhatsApp group invite link, reset it when it spreads too far, lock the group behind admin approval, and where to publish it so it actually converts.

WhatsApp Group Invite Links for Business: Create, Share and Secure Them

A click-to-chat link opens a private conversation. A group invite link opens a room full of people. For a plumber running a Saturday callout list or a gym filling a 7am class, that difference is the whole point: the message lands in front of everyone at once, and customers see each other asking questions, which quietly builds trust.

It is also the most abused link type in messaging. Publish one carelessly and it gets scraped, forwarded into spam rings, and used to harvest your customers' phone numbers. Here is the mechanics, the three settings that decide who gets in, and where to place the link so it converts without turning the group into a junk drawer.

What a group invite link actually is

When a group admin taps Invite via link, WhatsApp generates a single URL:

https://chat.whatsapp.com/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Four properties matter, and most guides skip them:

  • One link per group, not one per person. Everyone joins through the identical URL, so you cannot tell later which invitation brought which member.
  • Admins only. If the option is missing from the menu, you are not an admin β€” that is usually why a staff member "cannot find it".
  • No expiry timer. It works until an admin resets it, the group hits its member ceiling, or the group is deleted. A link that "stopped working" was almost always reset by someone.
  • No parameters survive. Adding ?utm_source=instagram to a chat.whatsapp.com link is cosmetic β€” WhatsApp ignores it, and no click data comes back.

Group link, chat link, community link, channel link

These four get confused constantly.

| Link type | Format | What the customer gets | Best for |

| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| Chat link | wa.me/32… | One-to-one chat with you | Sales, quotes, support |

| Group link | chat.whatsapp.com/… | Joins a shared room (up to 1,024 members) | Classes, cohorts, local announcements |

| Community link | chat.whatsapp.com/… (different code) | Joins a community, then its groups | Multiple branches or topics under one roof |

| Channel link | whatsapp.com/channel/… | Follows a one-way feed | Broadcast reach with no replies |

If you want a reply, use a chat link; a crowd that talks to each other, a group; reach with no moderation load, a channel β€” see our guide to WhatsApp Channels for business.

Creating the link, step by step

On the WhatsApp Business app (phone):
  • Open the group and tap the group name to reach Group info.
  • Tap Invite via link (iPhone: Invite to Group via Link).
  • Tap Copy link or Share link.
On WhatsApp Web or Desktop: open the group, click the group name, then Invite via link β†’ Copy link. The result is the same URL.

You can also turn that URL into a scannable code β€” printed on a counter card it works far better than asking someone to type 22 random characters. Our QR code guide for business covers sizing and placement.

The three settings that decide who gets in

Configure the group before you publish anything. Skipping this is the most common reason a business group dies within a month.

1. Admin approval. In Group settings, enable Approve new participants. Anyone arriving through the link now waits in a queue instead of entering the room. This is your spam filter, and it is the setting most businesses never turn on. 2. Reset the link. Same screen as the invite link, button Reset link. The old URL dies instantly and a new one is generated. Existing members are unaffected. Use it after a leak, after a printed batch goes stale, or after an event ends. 3. Restrict editing. Turn on Edit group settings and Send messages restrictions so only admins can change the name, icon, or post announcements. Without this, one member can rename your group to something that misrepresents your business.

One more, less obvious: a WhatsApp Business Platform (API) number generally cannot be added to a group. If you plan to connect a CRM later, keep group operations on the Business app number and route one-to-one conversations to the API number.

Where to publish it (and how)

A group link is a commitment, not a decoration. Put it where intent already exists β€” a class schedule, a delivery page, a post-purchase screen β€” rather than sprinkling it everywhere.

Landing page or blog, plain HTML:

<a href="https://chat.whatsapp.com/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX"

target="_blank" rel="noopener">

Join the Saturday callout list

</a>

Behind a redirect you control, so you can swap the group without reprinting anything:

// next.config.js β€” one place to change the destination

module.exports = {

async redirects() {

return [

{ source: '/join', destination: 'https://chat.whatsapp.com/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX', permanent: false },

];

},

};

That redirect is the cheapest tracking you will get: you at least know how many people clicked, even though WhatsApp will never tell you who joined. Add a ?src= value per channel and your own analytics handles attribution: yoursite.com/join?src=instagram.

For the one-to-one links that sit next to it, generate them properly rather than hand-typing a number β€” the link generator handles the wa.me format and pre-filled text, and our message template guide shows what that text should say.

The risks, plainly

  • Link leaks are permanent. Once a link is in a public post, scrapers index it. Admin approval is the real defence; resetting is the cleanup.
  • Numbers get harvested. Everyone in a group sees everyone's number. Never run a customer group where members are competitors, or where a leaked member list would be commercially sensitive.
  • Silent members cost nothing but look bad. A 300-member group with four active people signals a dead business. Small and alive beats large and quiet.
  • Consent still applies. Adding someone to a group is a marketing act under GDPR in the EU. Ask first β€” our opt-in guide covers what counts as valid consent.

When a group is the wrong tool

Groups break down past a few hundred engaged members, and break entirely when you need branches or announcements without chatter. That is what Communities are for: up to 5,000 members across up to 50 groups, with one announcement group reaching everyone. Same invite mechanics, separate link, far less moderation.

A practical progression: start with a group, graduate to a community when you need a second topic, move pure announcements to a channel. Measure the shift with the numbers in our chat analytics guide rather than by feel.

A five-minute checklist

  • [ ] Link created and copied, not retyped by hand
  • [ ] Approve new participants enabled
  • [ ] Only admins can edit settings or post
  • [ ] Group description states purpose, hours and rules
  • [ ] Link published behind a redirect you control
  • [ ] Calendar reminder to reset the link after each campaign

A group invite link is a door. Most businesses leave it open and then wonder why the room fills with strangers; ten minutes of settings puts someone at the door.
